but let me say specifically about susan rice, she has done exemplary work. she has represented the united states and our interests in the united nations with skill and professionalism and toughness and grace. as i said before, she made an appearance at the request of the white house in which she gave her best understanding of the intelligence that had been provided to her. if senator mccain and senator graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me. and i'm happy to have that discussion with them. but for them to go after the u.n. ambassador who had nothing to do with benghazi, and was simply making a presentation based on intelligence that she had received, and to besmirch her reputation is outrageous. and you know, we're after an election now. i think it is important for us to find out exactly what happened in benghazi and i'm happy to cooperate in any ways that congress wants. we have provided every bit of information that we have. and we will continue to provide information and we have got a full blown investigation. and all that in

he liked susan rice. he's close to her. it's clear he thinks she would be the best for the job or one of the best for the job, and he's going to fight for her. i think you're right. backing him into a corner may prompt him to fight harder. >> amanda, the story has not advanced since day one. john mccain and kelly ayotte and lindsey graham saying why did she say the things she said? the only advance we had is the intelligence community said she said exactly what we told her to say. we knew it was an attack, and we told her not to say because we didn't want al qaeda to know we knew it at that point. the real question is why is mccain making this attack and wasting whatever political capital and reputation he has left? >> reporter: well, some people are wondering does mccain want to simply stay in the spotlight? mccain is known for foreign policy. he's known for going on sunday shows. the benghazi issue gets him back in the spotlight. everyone is talking about john mccain again. so some people wonder if there's a little bit of

rice. >> susan rice is extraordinary. couldn't be prouder of the job that she's done at the u.n. >> all right, tim, when you hear senator collins, you know, she is influential, she is moderate, come out and say look, i'm not satisfied, sort of turning her back on susan rice, she had the moment in front of the microphone to endorse, she did not. should the administration cut its losses and say this might not be the right nominee. >> not at all. i think the president won the election. respect to suzanne collins' comments, she's obviously very influential and her support is important. but one thing she did say is that she wouldn't necessarily support her colleagues in blocking susan rice. the other thing i have to take exception with, these comments are political. we do have to give administration officials the space to do their jobs and in this case, ambassador rice was doing her job in talking about the attacks. >> let me ask you ryan about something that tim just said. senator colin does not say they would look susan rice

these are not questions susan rice has the answer to. luke, i want to ask about the interpersonal dynamics. susan rice is tough and as the governor said during the break she does not suffer fools badly. these were make nice meetings that didn't seem to go so well, correct? kelly ayotte known as a particular fire brand but came out with very, very strong language and said she would put a hold on susan rice's nomination. >> look, two things were surprising here. number one, a visit like this when you're actually not the nominee to be secretary of state, is a little odd. we were talking with other reporters earlier and no one can really remember these types of diplomatic visits for someone not officially nominated. after the criticism of rice softened this past weekend a lot of us expected this would be a get nice pow wow. it turned out to be awfully different, alex, and going forward it seems like the gop has centered on this is going to be their battle, their political battle, they feel they can score at lot of points on and the question
